Creamer that easily dissolved in hot liquid was developed by the Carnation Company in 1958. It was marketed under the brand name Coffee Mate.
Coffee-Mate was introduced to public in 1961 and remains the most popular non dairy creamer in the world. In 1984, Carnation was acquired by multinational company Nestle for $3 billion.
Coffee-Mate is the first powdered nondairy instant creamer. Coffee-Mate needed no refrigeration and half a spoonful or more could be added to black coffee to whiten it and alter the coffee’s taste.
Coffee-Mate was created to offer a nonperishable product that would make coffee look and ‘taste’ as if cream were added.
When Coffee-Mate discovered that African Americans tend to drink their coffee with sugar and cream more so than do Caucasians, the company mounted a promotional blitz in black-oriented media that resulted in double-digit increases in sales volume.
